Historical linguistics, a pivotal and interdisciplinary branch of Iranian studies, plays a crucial role in analyzing Iran's linguistic evolution, cultural transformations, and social history. This field, through the study of ancient languages such as Avesta, Middle Persian, and Old Persian, undertakes the systematic reconstruction of linguistic relationships, phonetic shifts, and syntactic developments. This offers profound insights into the intellectual, cultural, and historical dimensions of Iran.
This research explores the fundamental significance of historical linguistics within Iranian studies, particularly by assessing the comparative, etymological, and analytical methodologies employed in reconstructing ancient languages. The findings of this study reveal that early comparative studies, despite their linguistic accuracy in reconstructing Iranian languages based on Indo-European theories, often overlooked the broader sociocultural frameworks, including the impact of historical events and the role of language in shaping regional and national identities.
In contrast, contemporary research, which is informed by historical manuscripts and both Middle and Modern Iranian languages, provides a more holistic and nuanced perspective on the intricate relationship between language and culture. However, persistent resource limitations, alongside an overemphasis on standardized official languages, have marginalized linguistic diversity and endangered local dialects. This study employs content analysis and comparative linguistic methodologies to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches. The study further emphasizes that integrating digital tools, adopting interdisciplinary frameworks, and prioritizing the documentation of local dialects can bridge existing gaps, ultimately leading to a more comprehensive and contextualized understanding of Iran's rich linguistic and cultural heritage.
