The encounter of the Sogdian language with the concept of “to be able” among Middle Iranian languages is significant. In Sogdian, the potential structure has replaced the concept of “to be able”. The active potential is made from the past stem and the auxiliary verbs kwn- or wn-, and the passive potential is made from the past stem and the auxiliary verb β(w)-. Dryer in “Greenberg’s Word Order Correlations” has not chosen a particular pair for the auxiliary verb in the sense of “to be able” and the main verb. But Dabir-Moghaddam, in the Typology of Iranian languages, devoted the twentieth component of his research to “the order of the main verb and auxiliary verbs in the sense of ‘to be able’”. The following study demonstrates how the word order of the potential structure in Sogdian is not discussed in the twentieth component of Dabir-Moghaddam, but rather in the twelfth component of his research, “the order of the main verb and tense-aspect auxiliary verb”. This corresponds to the sixth correlation pair number of Dryer, i.e., tense-aspect auxiliary verb and VP. Moreover, the study shows how the verb βʾw- in “The Rostam Story” and the combined verb qtʾ wn- and qtʾ qtʾr- in the Christian texts solve the problem of the current lack of the sense of “to be able”. As a result, the order of βʾw- / qtʾ wn- and their main verb aligns with the twentieth component of Dabir-Moghaddam.
